Review: Fez

I'm trying to play through my video game backlog, and the most recent title I finished is Fez, a game by Polytron originally released in 2012.

If you've seen the Indie Game movie, you're familiar with Fez. But what I didn't know is the movie barely skims the surface of what Fez has to offer. It shows a few scenes from the first levels, but there are many more worlds and beautiful sights to see in the game.

The game isn't incredibly difficult to get the kill screen on (which is fine by me), but some of the puzzles were way beyond my skill to solve. I'm not sure how anyone figured some of them out, but I had to use DuckDuckGo to search out a few answers. Thankfully, you can roll the credits without solving every puzzle just by finding cubes elsewhere.

In my opinion, Fez is a beautiful game. You have to play it to get it. The pixel art mixed with 3D perspectives along with all the varied areas and elements make for a great looking game. Unfortunately I played with music off (was listening to other things) but the sound effects were excellent and I hear the music is incredible (and oh how I wished it was on for the ending.)

Two people created most of the game, although they had help from some animators, a musician and a sound designer. It's really impressive. The level design (Phil Fish) is amazing and I'm humbled that one programmer (Renaud B├ędard) made the game using the bare bones XNA/MonoGame engine.

All in all, I think Fez is a must play. It took me about 8 hours to get the credits but there is a ton more that can be done that I didn't get to. Check it out if you have a chance.
